Perhaps best known as the location for the perennial favorite TV show “Northern Exposure”, the town of Roslyn has a rich history. With just a thousand residents, Roslyn was founded in 1886 as a coal mining camp began a mining camp as grew into a rip roaring wilderness outpost. Coal mines were started to supply the insatiable appetite of the railroads which were pushing westward over Stampeded pass not far from the town.

In 1888 workers staged a strike and rather than acquiesce to their demands the Northern Pacific Coal Company recruited 300 African American miners from the East replace the strikers. The company organized its own vigilante force which was later dismantled by the fledging Washington Territory National Guard Troops.

Eventually coal production dwindled and Roslyn settled into a role as timber-cutting center and sleepy off the main road place to live. From 1990 to 1995 Hollywood came calling and chose Roslyn as the shooting location for a mythical town in Alaska. Many local’s appeared as extras and the whimsical nature of the town live on with fans from the world over. Many stop off to see the town as they whiz West on Interstate 90. There is even a Moose Fest each year that has become a big attraction.

Just South of Roslyn the major resort development of Suncadia has been rising and now brings large groups of visitors from Western Washington and around the country. The juxtaposition of old town Roslyn and newly built Suncadia makes for a fascinating destination.
